NZ-283/4(21/21) vs WI

New Zealand batsman Corey Anderson has set a new world record for the fastest century in one-day international cricket, blasting a ton off 36 balls against the West Indies in Queenstown.

The 23-year-old left-hander, who has played six ODIs for the Black Caps, smashed 14 sixes and six fours in a blistering 131 not out, breaking the previous record of 37 deliveries set by Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi against Sri Lanka in Nairobi in 1996.

He peeled off his 12th six of his innings off spinner Nikita Miller in the 18th over at the small Queenstown ground to reach three figures.
The West Indies lead the five-match series 1-0 after a two-wicket win at Eden Park on Boxing Day.

Anderson, who batted at No.5, upstaged New Zealand opener Jesse Ryder, who blasted 104 from 51 deliveries, clearing the boundary 12 times while also hitting five fours.

They combined for an astonishing 191-run partnership from 12.3 overs as New Zealand reached 4-283 from their alloted 21 overs after they were sent in to bat in the rain-affected game in Queenstown.

Rain just before the start of play halted proceedings for the third one-day-international and just when the game look set to be abandoned at 3.15pm the rain cleared and the groundsmen started working overtime to get the field fit to play.

It was eventually decided play could in fact start before the cut off time at 4.15pm to fit in 21 overs per side.

During the orginal warm-ups this morning the West Indies camp were delivered a nasty blow when key player Darren Sammy tore his hamstring and had to be helped from the field. His New Zealand tour is over.

Profile

A powerful middle-order striker, Corey Anderson gives the ball a hefty thump and can bowl some lively medium pace. He would not look out of place in the All Blacks' front row. Anderson became the youngest New Zealand player to gain a contract when, at 16, he was awarded the deal that Chris Harris declined. Anderson had already appeared for Canterbury the previous year and, within a year, he had played for New Zealand A as well as in the State final. A left-arm pace bowler and middle-order batsman, Anderson played in the Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia in 2008 and two years later again made the squad for the tournament, which was held at home in New Zealand.
